The North Annapurna Base Camp trek, also known as Maurice Herzog Trail, holds deep historic value as it follows the path of the legendary French mountaineer Maurice Herzog, who led the 1950 expedition that made the first successful ascent of Annapurna I — the world’s first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed. This pioneering achievement forever etched Annapurna into mountaineering history, and today trekkers can retrace parts of that heroic route. Alongside its historic significance, the trail unveils stunning landscapes, from lush forests and traditional Gurung and Magar villages to alpine meadows and glacier-fed valleys, all set against the dramatic backdrop of Annapurna I, Nilgiri, and Tilicho peak. Blending heritage and natural beauty, the Maurice Herzog Trail offers trekkers a rare chance to experience both the roots of Himalayan exploration and the grandeur of Nepal’s landscapes.
