Nepal is renowned as a popular destination for travel and trekking, attracting adventurers and mountain enthusiasts. However, there are still many places and activities waiting to be explored and discovered. In 2018, we visited Langtang Valley for research and recognized the potential in Gre village, located in the Rasuwa district. This village serves as a gateway to Langtang National Park, a well-known trekking area in Nepal. Gre village is an ethnic Tamang community with rich Tibetan cultural practices and remains largely untouched by modern influences.
Every year, around 60,000 people visit Langtang Valley for trekking to see the beautiful mountain view. The trekking trail leads directly to tea houses, the Gre village is a few steps away from the main route. The trekking path leads to small hotels and tea houses that are more commercial and only benefit the hotel owners. However, travelers are looking for unique experiences, wanting to connect with locals and experience the authentic lifestyles of Nepal. Gre village is the only place in the trekking area offering these unique experiences, allowing visitors to see real lifestyles and connect with the community.
The authenticity of Tibetan (Tamang) culture has become a major attraction for tourists in Gre village, promoting both tourism and cultural preservation. The locals maintain their traditions and rituals, which blend Tamang and Tibetan cultures, celebrating festivals like Buddha Purnima (the Enlightenment Day of Lord Gautam Buddha) and Losar Day. Travelers enjoy participating in these festivals, such as “Maane Jatra,” where they can experience cultural performances, dances, dramas, and enjoy local food and drinks. We organise different Cultural Immersive Programs in Nepal.
We have 3 different Travel programs:
“Traverse: A Himalayan Experience” is our 10-day travel package that invites travelers from diverse
backgrounds to stay in a Community Homestay in Gre village. During their stay, they can learn local skills
such as cooking, sewing, and organic farming. Travelers will connect with local women’s groups and
Community Homestay members. After a 2-day, 3-night program in the village, participants will begin their
trek from Gre village. These experienced are led by our experienced female trekking guides and by local women.
Service Learning: Service Learning is an approach that blends cultural exchange with progressive learning
experiences while addressing societal needs, introducing the concept of voluntourism to Gre village. This
initiative aims to bring national and international volunteers to the unique setting of Gre village for a
bilateral learning process. Volunteers will gain insight into diverse cultures and traditions, experience local
living, and simultaneously provide services based on the community’s needs. The project is designed to
offer mutual benefits, enriching both the community and the volunteers. The service learning programs allow the travelers to dive deeper into the Tibetan and Tamang cultures.
Social Work Camp: The program welcomes students of Social Work, Gender Studies, and Community
Development, offering them the opportunity to apply social work methodologies and techniques in a
real-world context. This immersive experience provides students with a deeper understanding of the
social dynamics, history, and cultures of Gre village, offering valuable insights into community.
